jack petchey awards

06 Nov 2014

Two more hard working and enthusiastic members of our coaching squads received Jack Petchey Awards in recognition of their excellent progress.  Conol Thomas-Lambert and Diesel Harvey have made excellent starts to their table tennis career - both achieving promotion to our "B" squad recently and getting their first taste of tournament play.

Alana Mansfield continued on her winning ways with victory in the U11 event at the Chandlers 2 star tournament at Grantham on 1st November. As well as winning the U11 Alana also finished runner up in the U13 event.  We look forward to more successes on the tournament circuit!

It seems to be almost non-stop table tennis events at BATTS this autumn.  On Sunday we had another in the Super Series attracting a high class entry chasing good prize money.

We were delighted to attract a huge entry of youngsters from all round our area at the first Grass Roots tournament of the season.  This was a chance for beginners with limited tournament experience to get their first taste of competition against children from other clubs. Our visitors included parties from Southend, Ilford, North Herts, Bedford, Braintree, Broxbourne and Bishops Stortford, as well as a dozen of our own juniors.
It was a full and exciting day's play on 14 tables, with a round robin group for all players in the morning, and then another after lunch. The tournament was then rounded off by a mini-knockout for the eight most successful players from the two group competitions.
There were some extremely close matches in the quarter finals, where the contenders were: TJ O'Sullivan, Callum Stepsky, Esher Bahara, William Bettley, Luke Manning, Luca Bailey, Ed Crawford, and Sophie Chiang. In the semi finals TJ overcame William Bettley in a very tough duel and Sophie Chiang surprised Luca Bailey to come out top and a really close match. In the final the experience of TJ O'Sullivan was too strong for the phenomenal 8 year old sensation Sophie Chiang, who is definitely a prospect  for the future.

Following the phenomenally successful training camps organised by Adam Nutland in August we are delighted that Des Douglas wants to return to BATTS and partner Adam in another great series of coaching events.
So here is another great opportunity to be helped by one of England's greatest players of all time!
Des will be with us for three days during the half term holidays:
Tuesday 28th October - Wednesday 29th October - Thursday 30th October
Each session will start at 1pm and finish at 6pm
Booking is now open - you can reserve a place by contacting Graham Frankel by email:
The cost of each session is £20 (non-members)  £10 (BATTS members)

It's ever onward and upward for young Ethan Walsh - he has now been selected for the England Youth Development Squad following a rigorous selection procedure at Lilleshall.
This selection will give Ethan more opportunities during the year for additional coaching and support from the national coaches.
For more information see the full article on the Table Tennis England website HERE
Well done Ethan!

Congratulations to Alana Mansfield in finishing runner up in the U11 Girls event at the Chandlers 2 star tournament in Grantham on 13th September. Alana was beaten in the final by Anna Hursey who is the current Welsh number 1 at U11.
We look forward to more successes from Alana who will surely improve on her 55 ranking in the U13 national rankings if she maintains her momentum.

BATTS will be hosting the first round of Senior British League matches in Division One on the weekend of Saturday and Sunday 20th and 21st September.
Our top team is getting ready to slog it out with some very tough opposition who will be travelling from a wide area of the country. We hope all our members will look in over the weekend to cheer on our team in their quest for promotion to the Premier Division.
